Gauge
18 single crochet stitches by 20 rows equals 4 inches by 4 inches worked in single crochet with US size E-4 (3.5 mm) hook, blocked.

Surface Embroidered Rosebud
The rosebuds are not crocheted separately. They are worked directly onto the finished fabric using a tapestry needle and CC1 yarn.
Thread your tapestry needle with CC1. Bring the needle up through the fabric at the center point where the rosebud will sit. Work a tiny straight stitch, approximately one stitch width long, going back down into the fabric. Bring the needle back up just beside the first stitch. Work a second straight stitch wrapping around the first in a slight arc. Bring the needle up again and work a third stitch wrapping further around the previous stitches in a tight spiral.
The result is a small, raised, coiled bud shape approximately 4 mm to 5 mm across. Pull each stitch snugly but not so tight that it puckers the background fabric. Fasten off on the wrong side with two small anchor stitches.
Alternative method: Each rosebud can be worked as a French knot cluster. Bring the needle up at the center point, wrap yarn around the needle three times, insert the needle back into the fabric just beside the entry point, and pull through while holding the wrapped yarn taut. Work two or three French knots clustered tightly together to form each rosebud.
Surface Embroidered Leaf
Each rosebud is accompanied by one or two small leaves worked in CC2 using a lazy daisy stitch. Bring the needle up at the base of the bud. Insert the needle back down at the same point, leaving a small loop on the surface. Bring the needle up at the tip of the desired leaf position (approximately 4 mm to 6 mm from the base), catching the loop. Insert the needle back down just over the loop to anchor it. Step by Step Pattern Instructions
Main Cover Panel
With MC and US E-4 (3.5 mm) hook, chain 41.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (40 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (40 sc)
Rows 3 through 62: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. (40 sc)
Work Rows 3 through 62 exactly as Row 2, repeating the sc-across row without any shaping.

Checkpoint: The finished button flap should measure approximately 2.2 inches wide by 1.8 inches tall. The loop should fit over an 18 mm to 20 mm shank button. If your button is larger, work ch 4 instead of ch 3 and work 4 sc into the loop space on the return row.
Embroidery Placement
Complete all embroidery before final assembly. Block the main panel first. Once dry, mark the embroidery positions lightly with a pin or removable marker.
Spine Column Rosebuds: The spine column runs along Rows 30 through 33 of the main panel. Along the center of this column, work 10 to 12 evenly spaced rosebuds using CC1. Space them approximately every 3 to 4 stitches down the column. Add one lazy daisy leaf on each side of each bud using CC2.
Front Panel Scattered Rosebuds: Work approximately 14 to 16 rosebuds scattered across the front panel section (Rows 34 to 62) in a pleasing, irregular arrangement. A suggested loose grid is to place rosebuds at approximately every 5th stitch horizontally and every 4th row vertically. Stagger alternate rows by 2 to 3 stitches to create a scattered effect. Add one or two lazy daisy leaves to each bud.
Spine Border Accent: Along the long edges of the spine column, concentrate the rosebuds more closely, approximately every 2 to 3 stitches. This creates a floral border framing the spine.
Assembly Instructions
Step 1: Weave in all ends on all pieces except the long sewing tails. Block all pieces.
Step 2: Fold the main panel. With wrong sides facing upward, fold so the spine section (Rows 30 to 33) becomes the center fold. The panel now forms a U shape with back panel on the left, spine at the base, and front panel on the right. The right side of the fabric faces outward on all sides.
Step 3: Attach the inside back pocket flap. Place it against the wrong side of the back panel section. Align the bottom edge of the pocket flap with the bottom edge of the main panel and one side edge with the outer edge of the back panel. The pocket opens at the top. Whipstitch or mattress stitch the flap along the bottom edge, the outer side edge, and the edge near the spine. Leave the top edge open.
Step 4: Attach the inside front pocket flap. Place it against the wrong side of the front panel section, mirror image of the back pocket flap. Seam along the bottom edge, the right side edge, and the left side edge. Leave the top open.
Step 5: Attach the button flap. With right side facing, position the button flap centered vertically on the outer right edge of the front panel. The loop should extend beyond the right edge. Whipstitch the left edge of the button flap to the right edge of the front panel.
Step 6: Sew the button. On the inside of the cover, mark the point where the loop reaches when closed. Sew the shank button securely at this point.
Step 7: Insert your book. Slide the back cover board into the back pocket flap and the front cover board into the front pocket flap. Fasten the button loop over the button to close.
Blocking and Finishing
Wet blocking is strongly recommended. Soak the finished main panel in cool water for 10 to 15 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Lay flat on a blocking mat, pin to the target dimensions, and leave to dry completely.
After embroidery and assembly, a light steam press on the wrong side with a damp cloth will smooth any puckering around the embroidered rosebuds.
Size Customization Tips
To fit a different book size, measure your book’s height, width of one cover panel, and spine depth.
For book height: calculate (book height in inches + 0.4 inch ease) x 4.5, then add 1 for the turning chain.
For panel width: calculate (panel width in inches + 0.1 inch ease) x 5 rows per inch.
For spine width: calculate spine depth in inches x 5, rounded up to the nearest even number.
Total rows equal back panel rows plus spine rows plus front panel rows.
Care Instructions
For acrylic yarn: Machine wash gentle cycle in cool water. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry or iron directly.
For cotton yarn: Machine wash gentle cycle or hand wash. Lay flat to dry. May be ironed on low with a damp cloth.
Check the shank button periodically to confirm the thread attachment remains secure.
