I have been dreaming about designing the ultimate Halloween statement piece for years. Something that would be festive without being costume-y. Something handmade and impressive that I could actually wear to a party, to work, or just around the house while handing out candy. When I finally sat down to create this skirt, I knew I wanted a gradient that would transition smoothly from moody black down through purple and into that perfect pumpkin orange. I wanted appliques that looked cute, not childish. And I wanted the whole thing to be completely crocheted, waistband and all.

The result is everything I hoped for and more. The color gradient creates this gorgeous ombre effect that honestly photographs like a dream. The scattered appliques of jack-o-lanterns, ghosts, black cats, and bats give you total creative freedom to make it your own. And that bat border at the hem? It ties the whole spooky vibe together perfectly.
I am SO pleased with how this turned out. This is an intermediate to advanced project, so you will need to be comfortable working in the round and managing color changes. But if you have made garments before or you are an adventurous crocheter ready to level up, you can absolutely do this. Let me walk you through every single step.
About This Halloween Crochet Pattern
This festive A-line midi skirt is worked entirely in the round from the waist down. There are no seams in the body, which means a smooth, professional finish. The construction starts with a ribbed waistband worked flat, then joined into a tube. You pick up stitches along the bottom edge of that waistband and work downward, increasing gradually to create that flattering flared silhouette.
The gradient transitions from black at the waist through charcoal gray, medium gray, purple, and finally into dark orange at the hem. A black bat border finishes off the bottom edge with a decorative scalloped detail that mimics bat wing silhouettes. The appliques are crocheted separately and sewn on after blocking, so you have complete control over placement.
Skill level: Intermediate to Advanced
Time estimate: Approximately 30 to 45 hours total. The skirt body takes roughly 15 to 20 hours. Appliques add another 10 to 15 hours. Finishing, blocking, and attaching adds 3 to 5 hours.
Finished Measurements
This pattern is written for a size Medium, fitting a waist of approximately 28 to 32 inches (71 to 81 cm) with a hip measurement of approximately 38 to 42 inches (97 to 107 cm). The finished skirt length is approximately 24 inches (61 cm) from top of waistband to hem. I have included sizing tips at the end if you need to adjust up or down.
Materials You Will Need
Yarn: Worsted weight (Category 4) smooth yarn in the following amounts:
Yarn suggestions: Lion Brand Pound of Love, Paintbox Yarns Simply DK used doubled, or Red Heart Super Saver all work beautifully. Avoid fuzzy or textured yarns because you need clean stitch definition for the gradient to read properly.
Hooks:
Notions:
Gauge
With US size J-10 / 6.0 mm hook:
14 single crochet stitches = 4 inches (10 cm)
16 rows of single crochet = 4 inches (10 cm)
Gauge matters here. A lot. Even being slightly off will give you a dramatically different waist and hip circumference. Please swatch, wash your swatch, and measure again before beginning.
Abbreviations and Stitch Definitions
Let me break down every abbreviation you will see in this crochet tutorial:
Special Techniques
Invisible Join: After the final slip stitch of a round, cut yarn and thread the tail onto a yarn needle. Insert the needle under both loops of the first stitch of that same round, then back down through the center of the last stitch made. Pull snug to mimic a stitch. This creates a seamless join.
Magic Ring (MR): Loop yarn around two fingers with the tail end overlapping the working yarn. Insert hook under both strands, pull working yarn through to make a loop, chain 1 to secure. Work stitches into the center of the ring, then pull the tail to close the hole tightly.
Pattern Notes Before You Begin
The skirt is worked in the round from the top down. There is no seam in the body.
All rounds are worked with the right side facing outward. Do not turn at the end of rounds unless specifically instructed.
The gradient color changes are achieved by switching yarn colors every 4 rounds. When changing colors, always make the color change on the last yarn over of the last stitch of the round before the new color begins.
Place stitch markers at the beginning of each round and move them up as you work.
Step by Step Crochet Pattern Instructions
Waistband
The waistband is worked flat in back loop only single crochet to create a ribbed texture, then joined into a tube.
With MC (Black) and J-10 hook, chain 21.
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (20 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn. (20 sc)
Repeat Row 2 until the ribbed strip measures approximately 30 inches (76 cm), or until it fits snugly around your waist with slight negative ease. This will typically take approximately 100 rows for a size Medium waist.
After completing the final row, do not fasten off. Fold the strip so that the short ends meet. Sl st through the corresponding loops of both ends to join into a tube, working across all 20 stitches to seam. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Checkpoint: The completed waistband should form a firm, stretchy tube measuring approximately 30 inches (76 cm) in circumference and 5 inches (12.5 cm) in height.
Picking Up Stitches for the Skirt Body
Hold the waistband with the RS facing outward and one long edge at the top. You will work into the ends of the rows along the bottom edge of the waistband.
With MC (Black) and J-10 hook, join yarn with sl st into any row end on the bottom edge.
Setup Round: Ch 1, work 1 sc into each row end around the entire bottom edge of the waistband. Join with sl st to first sc. Place marker. (100 sc)
Note: Your total stitch count must be divisible by 10. Adjust by skipping or adding a stitch evenly as needed.
Skirt Body
All rounds are worked in the round with RS facing. Do not turn.

Finishing Your Halloween Skirt
Weave in all ends securely using a yarn needle. Work tails in two directions for security.
Blocking: Wet block the skirt body by soaking in cool water, pressing out excess water gently in a towel, then laying flat on a blocking mat. Pin the hem to the correct circumference and allow to dry completely. Block all appliques separately by the same method.
Once everything is dry, pin appliques to the skirt in your desired arrangement. Use a yarn needle and coordinating yarn to sew each applique using a whip stitch around the perimeter. If you want a three-dimensional effect, leave a small opening before closing and lightly stuff the pumpkins and ghosts.
Final Checkpoint: The finished skirt should measure approximately 24 inches (61 cm) from waistband to hem, with a waist circumference of approximately 30 inches (76 cm) and a hem circumference of approximately 65 inches (165 cm).
Size Customization Tips
To increase the waist size, extend the waistband ribbing to your desired measurement plus 0.5 inch of negative ease. Pick up stitches at approximately 1 sc per row end and round your total to the nearest 10.
To lengthen the skirt, add plain rounds within any color section. Each additional round adds approximately 0.25 inch.
To shorten the skirt, eliminate plain rounds from each color section evenly.
For a fuller skirt, increase the frequency of increase rounds to every 3 rounds instead of every 4.
Care Instructions
If using acrylic yarn, machine wash on gentle cycle in cool water. Lay flat to dry. Do not put in a dryer. Store folded flat to preserve the waistband shape.
