Let me define every stitch abbreviation before we begin. Understanding these terms will make following the pattern much easier.
Special Stitches and Techniques
Ruffle Increase Shell
Work 3 dc in the same stitch. This creates visible fullness and a ruffled edge. Do not skip stitches before or after unless the pattern specifies.
Large Spot Motif
Using Yarn C and F-5 hook, make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc into the ring, pull ring closed, sl st to first sc to join. (6 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, work 2 sc in each stitch around, sl st to join. (12 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, work (sc in next st, inc in next st) around, sl st to join. (18 sc)
Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail for sewing. This creates a flat circular motif approximately 1 inch in diameter.
Small Spot Motif
Using Yarn C and F-5 hook, make a magic ring.

Ribbing Row

Repeat Row 2 for the length of ribbing required. The BLO creates stretchy vertical ridges.
Part 1: The Mushroom Hat Crochet Pattern
Section 1a: Crown
The crown is worked in continuous rounds starting at the top. Using Yarn B and G-6 hook, make a magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 6 sc into ring, do not join, pm to mark beginning of round, continue in a spiral. (6 sc)
Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sc)
Round 3: (Sc in next st, inc in next st) around. (18 sc)
Round 4: (Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st) around. (24 sc)
Round 5: (Sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st) around. (30 sc)
Round 6: (Sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st) around. (36 sc)
Round 7: (Sc in next 5 sts, inc in next st) around. (42 sc)
Round 8: (Sc in next 6 sts, inc in next st) around. (48 sc)
Round 9: (Sc in next 7 sts, inc in next st) around. (54 sc)
Checkpoint: After Round 9, the crown should be a flat circle measuring approximately 5 inches in diameter.
Rounds 10 through 17: Sc in each st around. (54 sc each round)
Checkpoint: After Round 17, the hat body should measure approximately 5.25 inches from crown tip to current working edge. The piece should resemble a rounded dome.
Section 1b: Brim Transition and Ruffle
At the end of Round 17, switch to Yarn A. Do not cut Yarn B yet.
Round 18 (transition ridge): Using Yarn A and F-5 hook, sc in each st around. (54 sc)
Round 19 (ruffle base): In each st around, work 3 dc (ruffle increase shell). Do not skip any stitches. (162 dc total across 54 shells)
Round 19 creates heavy fullness. The fabric will ruffle and wave naturally. This is correct.
Round 20: Sl st in each st around to create a tidy ruffle edge. (162 sl st)
Fasten off Yarn A, leaving a 6-inch tail. Weave in end on WS.
Checkpoint: After the ruffle, your hat brim should flare outward by approximately 1.25 inches and have a scalloped, wavy appearance.
Section 1c: Chin Ties
With Yarn A and F-5 hook, identify the two side points of the hat where it would rest just in front of each ear.
At one side point, join Yarn A with sl st at brim edge. Ch 40. Sl st back down the chain to create a firm cord. Fasten off.
Repeat on the opposite side.
Section 1d: Spot Appliques
Work 3 large spots using the Large Spot Motif instructions.
Work 4 small spots using the Small Spot Motif instructions.
Arrangement: Place 2 large spots and 2 small spots on the front face of the hat. Place 1 large spot and 2 small spots on the sides and back. Scatter them in a natural mushroom spot arrangement. No spots are placed on the ruffle.
Using yarn needle and Yarn C tails, sew each spot to the hat using whipstitch around the outer edge. Pull tails to WS and weave in.
Part 2: The Bloomer Overalls Crochet Pattern
The bloomer is constructed in this order: front ribbed waistband, front body panel, back ribbed waistband, back body panel, side seams, crotch seam, leg cuffs, suspenders, and button closures.
Section 2a: Front Waistband Ribbing
Using Yarn A and F-5 hook:
Row 1: Ch 7. Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (6 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in BLO across. Turn. (6 sc)
Repeat Row 2 until ribbing measures 7 inches long, ending with a WS row. This produces approximately 24 rows of ribbing.
Do not fasten off. Rotate the ribbing 90 degrees to work along the long edge.
Section 2b: Front Body Panel
Pick up stitches along the long edge of the ribbing. Using G-6 hook:
Setup Row: Ch 1, work 36 sc evenly across the long edge of the waistband ribbing. Turn. (36 sc)
Rows 1 through 12: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (36 sc each row)
Checkpoint: The front body panel should now measure approximately 3.5 inches below the waistband.
Crotch Shaping (Front):
Row 13: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (34 sc)
Row 14: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (32 sc)
Row 15: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (30 sc)
Row 16: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (28 sc)
Fasten off Yarn A, leaving a 12-inch tail for seaming.
Section 2c: Back Waistband Ribbing
Work exactly as for Front Waistband Ribbing. Ribbing should measure 7 inches. Do not fasten off.
Section 2d: Back Body Panel
Setup Row: Ch 1, work 36 sc evenly across the long edge of the back ribbing. Turn. (36 sc)
Rows 1 through 14: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (36 sc each row)
The back panel is 2 rows taller than the front panel before shaping begins. This provides a slightly deeper back rise, which is standard in fitted baby bloomers.
Crotch Shaping (Back):
Row 15: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (34 sc)
Row 16: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (32 sc)
Row 17: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (30 sc)
Row 18: Ch 1, dec, sc across to last 2 sts, dec. Turn. (28 sc)
Fasten off Yarn A, leaving a 12-inch tail for seaming.
Section 2e: Assembly
Align the front and back panels with RS facing RS. The waistbands should sit at the same level.
Side seams: Using yarn needle and matching Yarn A, whipstitch the side edges of the front body panel to the side edges of the back body panel. Work from the waistband edge downward along the full side edge of both pieces.
Crotch seam: Fold the piece so the two crotch-shaped edges face each other. Whipstitch the shaped crotch edges together, starting at the point of deepest decrease and working outward toward each leg opening.
Checkpoint: After seaming, the bloomer should look like a rounded diaper-cover shape with two leg holes and an open waistband top.
Section 2f: Leg Cuffs
Work each leg cuff identically.
With RS facing, join Yarn A at the inner crotch seam of one leg opening.
Round 1: Ch 1, work 28 sc evenly around the leg opening. Pm at beginning of round. (28 sc)
Round 2: Sc in BLO in each st around. (28 sc)
Round 3: Sc in BLO in each st around. (28 sc)
Round 4: Sl st in each st around to finish. (28 sl st)
Fasten off and weave in ends. Repeat for second leg opening.
Section 2g: Suspenders
Work 2 identical suspender straps using Yarn A and G-6 hook.
Ch 61. Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (60 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, sc across. Turn. (60 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, sc across 2 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts, sc across rem 56 sts. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc across to ch-2 sp, work 2 sc in the ch-2 sp, sc across to end. Fasten off. (60 sc)
Each suspender should measure approximately 17 inches long and 0.75 inch wide.
Attaching suspenders to back: Lay the bloomer flat with the back facing up. Cross the two suspenders in an X at the center back. Sew the crossed section together at the center back. Then sew each suspender’s back end to the inside top edge of the back waistband, approximately 3 inches apart.
Section 2h: Button Closures
Attach 2 wooden buttons to the front waistband, spaced evenly, approximately 1.75 inches apart from center. Buttons sit centered on the front waistband and align with the suspender buttonholes.
Two additional buttons may be sewn at the front as decorative accent buttons between the suspender attachment points, as shown in the finished item.
Finishing Your Mushroom Baby Set
Weave in all remaining ends using a yarn needle. Bury ends on the WS by running through at least 4 stitches in different directions to prevent unraveling during washing.
Blocking: Wet block by soaking in cool water for 10 minutes. Gently press out water without wringing, lay flat and shape to finished dimensions, and allow to dry completely. For the hat, stuff loosely with a clean towel while drying to help maintain the dome shape. Attach all spot appliques after blocking is complete.
Size Customization Tips
To size up to 6 to 9 months: Work 4 additional rounds in the crown body section before beginning the brim ruffle. Add 4 additional rounds to the bloomer body before working the crotch. Add 2 extra chains to each leg opening round.
To size down to 0 to 3 months: Reduce crown body rounds by 4 and bloomer body rounds by 4.
For width adjustment in the bloomer: Add or remove 4 stitches from the foundation chain in increments divisible by 4.
Care Instructions
Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water if using superwash or acrylic yarn. Hand wash in cool water with mild baby-safe detergent for all other fiber types. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry. Wooden buttons should be removed before machine washing, or hand washing is preferred when buttons are attached.
