Special Stitches

Pattern Notes Before You Begin

Section 4: Collar

Using MC and E-4 hook, chain 65.

Collar Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (64 sc)

Collar Row 2 (WS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st. (Sk 1 st, 2 dc in next st) rep across. Turn. (64 dc total, 32 pairs)

Collar Row 3 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first st. (Ch 2, 5 dc in sp between next pair of dc, ch 2, sc between next pair of dc) rep across, ending sc in last st. Turn. (15 shells, 16 sc)

Collar Row 4 (Scallop Edge, RS): Do not turn. Work along the bottom edge of Row 3: (sl st, ch 1, 3 dc, ch 1, sl st) into each ch-2 sp across. Join to corner. Fasten off.

Collar Top Edge Finishing: Reattach MC to the original foundation chain edge. Work 1 row of sl st across all 64 sts of the foundation chain to stabilize. Fasten off.

Assembly: Pin the collar to the neckline with WS of collar facing RS of bodice. Seam using whip stitch with MC.

Section 5: Sleeves (Optional Edging)

Join MC at underarm seam. Work 1 rnd of sc evenly around sleeve opening (approximately 28 sc). Join with sl st. (28 sc)

Scallop Rnd: (Sk 1 sc, 5 dc in next sc, sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc) rep around. Join with sl st. Fasten off. (7 scallops)

Repeat for second sleeve.

Section 6: Bow

Using CC (Yarn B) and E-4 hook, chain 17.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (16 sc)

Rows 2 to 6: Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn. (16 sc each row)

Fasten off, leaving a 12 inch tail. Pinch the rectangle at its center and wrap the tail yarn tightly around the center 3 to 4 times. Knot securely.

Center Band: Using CC, chain 10. Sl st back to first chain to form a loop. Slip the loop over the bow center to cover the wrapped yarn. Fasten off.

Sew the completed bow to the center front of the empire waist band.

Section 7: Mary Jane Booties (Make 2)

Using CC (Yarn B) and E-4 hook, chain 13.

Sole:

Rnd 1: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in next 10 ch. 3 sc in last ch. Working back along opposite side: sc in next 10 ch. Join with sl st. (26 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, inc in next 3 sts. Sc in next 10 sts. Inc in next 3 sts. Sc in next 10 sts. Join with sl st. (32 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, (sc in next st, inc in next st) 3 times. Sc in next 10 sts. (sc in next st, inc in next st) 3 times. Sc in next 10 sts. Join with sl st. (38 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each st around. Join with sl st. (38 sc)

Working in back loop only (BLO) creates that ridge that defines the sole from the upper.

Upper:

Rnd 5: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with sl st. (38 sc)

Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in first 13 sts. (Sc2tog) 6 times. Sc in last 13 sts. Join with sl st. (32 sc)

Cut 18 lengths of Yarn A, each 36 inches long. Divide into 3 groups of 6 strands. Braid tightly. Tie overhand knots at each end. Trim to 0.5 inch from knot.

Join ends to form a loop approximately 14 inches around. Wrap and seam securely.

Headband Flower: Using MC, make a magic ring. Ch 1, 6 sc into ring. Join. (Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, ch 3, sl st in next st) rep 6 times. (6 petals) Fasten off.

Using CC, rejoin at center. Work 5 sc into ring for cream center. Fasten off.

Sew flower to headband with button in center.

Section 9: Back Closure

Using MC, work 1 row of sc down each back edge. At the top of the right back edge, chain 4, sl st into same st to form a button loop. Sew a button to the left back aligned with the loop.

Size Customization Tips

For Newborn (0 to 3 months): Reduce foundation chain from 65 to 55. Work only Rows 1 to 10 before underarm division. Reduce skirt to 16 shell repeats. Reduce bootie sole chain from 13 to 11.

For 12 to 18 months: Increase foundation chain to 75. Work 2 additional plain rows before underarm division. Add 2 additional skirt rounds between Rounds 14 and 15. Increase bootie sole chain to 15.

Finishing and Blocking

Blocking is essential for this dress. Soak the completed dress in cool water for 15 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing. Lay flat on a blocking board and pin the collar, hem scallops, and sleeve scallops to correct dimensions. Allow to dry completely, which takes 12 to 24 hours.

Block the booties by stuffing lightly with tissue paper while damp.

Care Instructions

Machine wash on gentle cycle in cold water inside a mesh laundry bag. Lay flat to dry. Do not tumble dry. Store folded, not hung, to prevent stretching.
