If you have a baby shower coming up or a little one who needs something cozy, this romper delivers. The waffle stitch creates that gorgeous textured grid you see in the photos, and the warm caramel color works beautifully for any season.

This pattern uses front post and back post double crochet to build the raised waffle texture. The construction includes a front panel with a bib, a back panel, adjustable shoulder straps, a chest pocket with a ribbed flap, ribbed leg openings, and matching booties. Everything comes together into one complete outfit that looks store bought but carries that handmade love.
Sized for 0 to 3 months with tips for sizing up, this romper makes an unforgettable gift. The intermediate skill level means you should be comfortable with basic shaping and seaming, but I walk you through every step. Plan for about 12 to 18 hours total, and you will have a complete romper and bootie set.
Why This Waffle Stitch Baby Romper Works So Well
The waffle stitch is one of those patterns that looks incredibly complex but follows a simple rhythm once you understand the structure. You are alternating front post double crochet (FPdc) and back post double crochet (BPdc) stitches in a specific sequence that builds up that raised grid texture row by row.
The romper construction is smart too. You work the front and back panels flat, seam them together at the sides, then add the straps, pocket, and leg ribbing as separate components. This means you are never wrestling with shaping while working in the round, and each piece stays manageable.
Those wooden buttons are not just decorative. They make the straps adjustable so the romper grows with baby. You can move the buttonhole to a different button position as baby gets longer, extending the life of this garment.
Materials You Will Need
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn (weight category 4), approximately 300 to 350 yards in caramel or warm tan
Hook: US Size G-6 / 4.0 mm crochet hook
Notions:
Yarn Suggestions
Lion Brand Pound of Love in Camel or Honey works beautifully. This 100% acrylic worsted weight yarn is machine washable, baby soft, and holds stitch definition perfectly for the waffle texture.
Paintbox Yarns Simply DK used doubled in Champagne White or Soft Fudge creates a worsted equivalent weight with excellent stitch clarity.
Cascade 220 Superwash in Straw or Caramel offers a wool option that is machine washable with unmatched softness.
Choose a yarn with good stitch definition. Avoid fuzzy or halo textured yarns as they will obscure the waffle pattern.
Gauge
With US G-6 / 4.0 mm hook in waffle stitch pattern:
14 stitches x 16 rows = 4 in x 4 in / 10 cm x 10 cm
In single crochet (for straps and bands):
16 stitches x 18 rows = 4 in x 4 in / 10 cm x 10 cm
Gauge is critical for a properly fitting baby garment. Make a swatch of at least 20 stitches and 20 rows before beginning. Wash and block your swatch before measuring.
Finished Measurements
This pattern is written for size 0 to 3 months.

Understanding the Waffle Stitch
The waffle stitch creates that beautiful raised grid by working post stitches around the vertical bars of stitches from the previous row. When you work an FPdc, the stitch pops toward you. When you work a BPdc, the stitch recedes away. Alternating these in a specific pattern builds the waffle texture.
The stitch repeat works over a multiple of 3 stitches plus 2. The turning chain of ch 2 does NOT count as a stitch in waffle sections. Always work into the first stitch at the base of the turning chain.

Seaming the Body
With WS together (so seam is on inside of garment), align front and back panels along side edges. Using yarn needle and mattress stitch or whip stitch, seam the sides from the top armhole edge down to the leg opening. Leave the top 4 in / 10 cm at each side open as the armhole.
Seam the crotch by aligning front and back crotch center sections (the 14 skipped center sts from each panel) and seaming together.
Turn RS out. The romper body should have two leg openings, two armhole openings, and the front bib standing up at the chest.
Leg Opening Ribbing
Work ribbing around each leg opening:
Join yarn at the inner leg seam with a sl st.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire leg opening, placing approximately 28 sc total evenly spaced. Sl st to join. (28 sc)
Rnds 2 through 5: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each sc around. Sl st to join. (28 sc each rnd)
Fasten off and weave in end. Repeat for second leg opening.

On Row 11, after working first 6 sts, ch 2, sk 2 sts, work remaining 7 sts. On Row 12, work sc across including 2 sc in the ch-2 sp to close buttonhole.
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Sew pocket to front panel, centering it approximately 1 in / 2.5 cm below the top edge of the bib.
Booties (Make 2)
Sole Foundation: Ch 10.
Rnd 1 (RS): Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 8 chs, 3 sc in last ch (toe). Rotate and work back along opposite side of foundation chain: sc in each of next 8 chs, 2 sc in first ch (heel). Sl st to join. (22 sc)

Rnd 9: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each sc around. Sl st to join. (22 sc)
Rnds 10 through 14: Ch 1, sc in BLO of each sc around. Sl st to join. (22 sc each rnd)

Button Placement
Sew 2 buttons to the top edge of the front bib panel (one on each upper corner) to receive the front strap ends. Sew 2 buttons to the back upper edge of the back panel (one at each upper corner) to anchor the bottom ends of the straps. Sew 1 button to the center of the pocket flap aligning with the pocket buttonhole.
All buttons should be sewn securely with doubled thread and reinforced from the inside for baby safety.
Size Customization Tips
For 3 to 6 months: Add 6 stitches to the foundation chain of the front bib (56 total working sts) and 6 stitches to the back panel foundation (66 total working sts). Add 4 rows to the body length section.
For 6 to 9 months: Add 12 stitches to the front bib foundation and 12 stitches to the back panel. Add 8 rows to the body length. Adjust straps to be 4 rows longer.
Remember the waffle stitch repeat is a multiple of 3 stitches plus 2 edge stitches. Confirm your new stitch count satisfies this formula.

Finishing and Care
Weave in all ends securely using a yarn needle. Bury ends within the fabric rather than knotting, as knots can be felt against baby skin.
Wet block by soaking in cool water for 10 minutes, gently squeezing out excess water, then laying flat on a clean towel. Pin to finished dimensions and allow to dry completely.
Machine wash on gentle cycle in cool water. Use a mesh laundry bag to protect buttons. Lay flat to dry.
